Lily lay back on a big pillow-shaped cloud, soft as a cotton ball. She wiggled her toes and felt the cloud wobble gently, like a boat on calm water. Beside her, tiny Firefly blinked awake, glowing a warm little gold.
"Ready to float?" whispered Firefly. "She nodded, and the cloud began to rise, slow and soft, up past the rooftops and into the deep blue night.
The first planet they passed was round and orange, humming a low, sleepy tune. "Goodnight," Lily whispered, waving her hand. The orange planet blinked one big sleepy eye and dimmed its light, as if waving back.
Next came a ring-planet, its rings sparkling like sugar dust. Lily giggled and reached out, but she did not touch it — just waved instead. "Goodnight, ring planet," she said softly, and it spun a little slower, settling down to rest.
They floated past a tiny moon curled up like a sleeping cat, and a cluster of stars blinking slower and slower. Firefly glowed brighter to light the path between them, humming a quiet tune that matched the hush of the sky.
Lily felt her eyes grow heavy, but there was one more planet ahead — a pale blue one, very quiet. "That one is almost asleep too," Firefly whispered. Lily waved her hand one last time. "Goodnight, little blue planet," she murmured.
Slowly, the cloud drifted into the darkest, quietest part of the sky, where no planets hummed and no stars blinked anymore. It was soft and still, like the middle of a lullaby. Lily sighed, feeling snug and small in the great gentle dark.
Firefly settled down beside her, his little light dimming to a soft, warm glow, like a nightlight just for her. "We made it," he whispered. "The quietest place of all."
Lily curled up on the cloud, pulling it close like a blanket. She could still feel the whisper of the planets she had waved to, all of them resting now, just like her. "Goodnight, Firefly," she whispered.
Firefly's light pulsed once, softly, like a tiny heartbeat. "Goodnight, Lily," he whispered back. And on their soft, drifting cloud, in the calmest corner of the sky, Lily closed her eyes and slept.
