The Great Backyard Hunt

The sun was low and golden when Oscar noticed the squeaky ball was gone. He had been playing catch with Biscuit, the little floppy-eared puppy, just a moment before. Now the yard was quiet, and the ball was nowhere to be seen.
"Where did it go, Biscuit?" Oscar asked. Biscuit tilted his head and gave a small, worried whine. He knelt down and patted Biscuit's soft ears. "Don't worry. We'll find it together."
A tiny light blinked near the fence. It was Firefly, glowing soft and gold in the dusky air. "Two noses and two pairs of eyes are better than one," Firefly whispered, and drifted along the garden path to show the way.
Oscar started by the flower bed, pushing aside the daisies with careful hands. Biscuit sniffed at the dirt, his tail wagging fast. But under the daisies there was only a smooth grey stone, not a squeaky ball.
"Not here," Oscar sighed, feeling a little disappointed. He almost wanted to give up and go inside. But Biscuit nudged Oscar's hand with his wet nose, as if to say, keep going, and Firefly floated ahead toward the old wooden bench.
Under the bench, Oscar found a stick and an old sock, but still no ball. He sat back on his heels, brushing grass from his knees. Biscuit sat beside him, leaning close, warm and steady.
"Maybe it's easier when we look at the same time," Oscar said slowly. He pointed to the left side of the yard. "You look over there, I'll look here, and we'll meet in the middle."
So Oscar searched behind the watering can while Biscuit dug gently near the vegetable patch. Firefly hovered between them, lighting up first one corner, then the other, humming a small cheerful tune.
Then Biscuit gave a happy bark. His nose was pressed into a patch of tall grass near the swing. Oscar hurried over, heart beating fast, and there it was, the little red ball, half hidden and a bit muddy, but safe.
"You found it!" Oscar cried, scooping up the ball and laughing. He gave Biscuit a big hug, feeling his floppy ears tickle his cheek. Biscuit wagged his whole body with joy.
"We found it," Oscar corrected softly, smiling down at the puppy. "Together is much better than alone."
Firefly glowed brighter for a moment, as if agreeing, then floated up toward the porch light. "The best hunts," he whispered, "are the ones you share."
Oscar squeezed the ball, and it gave a happy little squeak. Biscuit's ears perked up, and he spun in a happy circle. The sound felt like victory, small and sweet.
Together they walked back across the yard, Oscar's hand resting on Biscuit's warm back. The grass was cool under his bare feet, and the sky was turning soft shades of purple and pink.
Mom called from the porch that it was almost bedtime. Oscar looked down at Biscuit, who yawned a tiny puppy yawn, tired from all the searching and finding.
That night, Oscar placed the squeaky ball on the shelf where he could see it, right beside a photo of Biscuit. He climbed into bed, feeling warm and happy inside.
Firefly blinked gently from the windowsill one last time before drifting off into the dark garden. "Goodnight, little searcher," he whispered. "Tomorrow there will be new things to find, side by side."
Oscar smiled sleepily, Biscuit curled up close by the bed. Outside, the yard was quiet and still, keeping all its little secrets safe until morning.
