The tall trees stood like sleepy giants, their leaves whispering high above. Ava stood at the edge of the mossy path, holding tight to the straps of her little backpack. She had never seen so many trees before, and she did not know where to go.
A tiny light blinked near Ava's shoulder. It was Firefly, glowing softly and gold in the morning shade. "Good morning," he said. "Would you like a friend to walk with?"
Ava nodded slowly. She felt a little less alone already. "I don't know where the kindergarten is," she whispered. "Everything looks so big."
"Then let's look together," said Firefly, and he floated forward, just above the ferns. Ava followed her tiny guide, stepping over roots curled like sleeping cats and under branches that dipped low to say hello.
The path curved past a bubbling stream and a patch of speckled mushrooms. Ava paused to watch a snail inch along a leaf. "We're close," said Firefly gently. "Just past those birch trees."
Ava took a deep breath and walked on, her shoes crunching softly on the twigs. She felt her tummy flutter, like a small bird beating its wings.
Then the trees opened up into a round, sunny clearing. In the middle sat a circle of soft cushions covered with big leaves, all different colors like red, gold and green. Some children were already sitting there, and a squirrel was tucking acorns into a little basket nearby.
Ava stopped at the edge of the clearing. Her feet suddenly felt too heavy to move. The circle looked warm and friendly, but also new, and new things could feel scary.
"You don't have to rush," Firefly whispered, landing gently on Ava's sleeve. "Just take one small step. I'll be right here glowing beside you."
Ava looked at the glowing light on her sleeve and felt a little braver. She took one step, then another, her heart beating fast but hopeful.
A boy with curly hair looked up and smiled. "You can sit by me!" he called, patting the leaf cushion next to him. A girl with a flower behind her ear waved both hands. "We saved you a spot!" she said happily.
Ava smiled back, feeling warmth spread through her chest like sunshine after rain. She walked over and sat down on the soft leaf cushion, and it was even comfier than it looked.
Firefly settled onto a nearby twig, glowing proudly. "See?" he said softly. "Your new friends were waiting to say hello."
The circle of children shared stories about ladybugs and puddle-jumping, and Ava found herself laughing along, her nervous flutter turning into happy bubbles.
When the sun rose higher and painted golden patches on the leaf cushions, Ava looked around at her new friends and felt glad she had taken that first small step.
After a happy day at kindergarten, Ava was tucked into bed that night, thinking about the tall trees, the soft leaf circle, and the friends who had waved her in. Firefly's little light blinked once more in her memory, warm and gentle. She closed her eyes, ready to dream of tomorrow's forest morning.
