Finn and the Stream-Shy Dragon

The night was soft and blue when Finn walked along the mossy path with Firefly bobbing beside him. Firefly's little light blinked like a warm gold star. "This way," Firefly hummed, "there is something to see near the stream."
Finn followed the glow until the path opened onto a wide stream, silver and rippling under the moon. On the far bank sat a small dragon with crumpled purple wings, sniffling into his scaly paws. His scales shimmered green, but his eyes were wet and worried.
"I want to cross," the little dragon said, his voice wobbly. "But the stream is so wide, and what if I fall in?" He curled his tail tighter around himself and looked away.
Finn crouched by the water's edge. He could feel the cool mist on his cheeks and hear the stream chuckling over the stones. He looked along the bank and spotted a sturdy little footbridge a short way upstream, its wooden planks solid and wide. "That looks like a safe way across," Finn thought.
Firefly landed gently on Finn's shoulder. "You don't have to be sure," he whispered. "You just have to try the first step."
Finn took a deep breath. His heart thumped fast, like a little drum. He walked to the footbridge, set his hand on the rail, and stepped onto the first plank.
It held steady beneath him, firm and solid, and he laughed with surprise. The bridge did not wobble at all. Firefly zipped ahead, lighting the way across the planks like a tiny lantern.
"One more step," Finn said, mostly to himself, and walked on. He heard the water splashing below as it swirled beneath the bridge, but his feet landed sure and steady. Step by step, Finn crossed the wide stream, until he stood on the other side, breathing fast and grinning.
The little dragon's eyes went round and shiny. "You did it! You really did it!" he said, scrambling closer to the bank. "But I still don't know if I can."
Finn sat down beside him on the cool grass. "I was scared too," he said gently. "My legs felt shaky. But Firefly said I only had to try the first step, not all of them at once."
The dragon looked at the footbridge, then at Firefly's soft glowing light dancing over the water. He flexed his small purple wings, took a wobbly step toward the bridge, and looked back at Finn.
"You can watch the first plank only," Finn called across the stream. "Just the first one."
The little dragon gathered himself, flapped his wings for balance, and stepped onto the bridge. He wobbled, then steadied himself, grinning wide. One step became two, and two became three, until he walked, sure-footed, onto the bank beside Finn, panting and delighted.
"I did it!" he cried, spinning in a happy circle. "I really did it!"
Finn laughed and clapped his hands, feeling warm and proud inside, like a little candle had been lit in his chest. Firefly circled them both, blinking happily, his light dancing over the grass.
The three of them walked together back along the mossy path to Finn's cozy little home, listening to the water sing its quiet song under the moon behind them. The little dragon padded along close, no longer trembling, and Finn smiled a soft, tired smile.
"Thank you for stepping first," the dragon whispered sleepily, curling up on a soft blanket by the hearth. "It helped to see it could be done."
Finn yawned and watched Firefly's glow dim to a gentle, sleepy shimmer. "That's what Firefly taught me," he said softly. "Sometimes you just need someone to step first."
And tucked snugly into his warm bed, with Firefly's light glowing like a tiny moon on the nightstand, Finn closed his eyes and drifted into a warm, happy sleep.
