When the sun went down, the shadows in Max's room grew long and stretchy. They climbed up the wall by the toy shelf and curled around the chair like sleepy cats. Max pulled the blanket up to his chin and looked at the darkest corner by the window.
"Mom," Max whispered, "that corner looks like it's hiding something." Mom sat down on the edge of the bed and looked where Max was pointing. "Hmm," she said. "I think that corner just needs a little magic."
A tiny light blinked near the curtain. It was Firefly, floating in lazy little circles, his glow soft and gold. He blinked twice, as if to say hello, and Max felt a little braver already watching him.
"Let's make a spell," Mom said, wiggling her fingers in the air. "A silly one, just for us." Max sat up, curious. He liked the sound of that. He wiggled his fingers too, copying the shapes Mom made.
"Glimmer, glow, shadows go," Mom whispered, waving her hands like she was painting stars. Max giggled and waved too, saying the words in a hushed, wobbly voice. "Glimmer, glow, shadows go!"
Firefly drifted closer to the dark corner, blinking his small light there, as if helping the spell along. The shadow didn't disappear, but somehow it looked softer now, like a cat curled up and sleepy instead of sneaky.
"Say it again," Mom said, smiling. Max took a deep breath and waved his hands bigger this time. "Glimmer, glow, shadows go! Turn to friends, and off you go!" He added the new words all by himself, and Mom laughed a warm, happy laugh.
"That's an even better spell," she said. "You made that part up yourself." Max felt something warm bloom in his chest, right where the worry had been sitting a moment ago. The corner didn't feel like a hiding place anymore. It just looked like a corner.
Firefly floated over and landed gently on the windowsill, glowing steady and soft like a tiny nightlight. "See," Mom whispered, "even Firefly thinks the spell worked." Max smiled at him, and he could have sworn Firefly blinked back.
Max lay down again, pulling the blanket up. The shadows were still there, stretched long across the floor, but they didn't feel scary now. They felt like part of the room, quiet and familiar, like old friends settling in for the night.
"Will you say the spell with me tomorrow?" Max asked, yawning. "Every night, if you want," Mom said, tucking the blanket snug around his shoulders. She kissed his forehead and smoothed the hair from his face.
Firefly's little light dimmed slowly, softly, like a lamp being turned down for sleep. Max watched the corner one more time, whispered the spell one more time under his breath, and smiled.
He closed his eyes, feeling warm and brave and sleepy all at once. The room was quiet, the shadows were calm, and somewhere by the window, Firefly kept his small, steady glow, watching over Max until he drifted off to sleep.
